Out and About

Much of the Wee County of Clackmannanshire still lies largely unexplored by visitors but, like us, the good folk of the County would love to share its rich history, diverse landscape, wildlife and cultural activities with you. Here’s a shortlist of some of the richest pickings in the Wee County and surrounding area for 2018:

RSPB Black Devon Wetlands – take a guided walk round RSPB Scotland’s newest reserve on 11 February & hear about why the Inner Forth is so special (25 minutes drive)

Full programme of events for the 2018 season at Knockhill, Scotland’s national motorsports centre (15 minutes drive)

The Japanese Garden at Cowden, reputed to be the most important Japanese garden in the Western World (history & heritage talks), reopened this year and is within walking distance of Baldiesburn

Open Doors Weekend (history events) – for more details see Clackmannanshire Council website http://www.clacks.gov.uk/

Glasgow 2018 European Championships – European Golf Team Championship at Gleneagles (15 minutes drive): http://europeanchampionships.com.  Click on the link to purchase tickets: https://glasgow2018.com/tickets

Many of our guests make special trips to Scotland with genealogy in mind, while others catch the bug to dig into their family tree just because they’re here, in this atmospheric land of their forebears.  No need to head into Edinburgh to do your research any more, because Clackmannanshire Council now offers access to the ScotlandsPeople database to search millions of Scottish records at its Family History Centre in the Speirs Centre, Alloa for a small fee. Brilliant for all would-be family historians!

Feel free to browse the blogs we’ve penned on some of the highlights of the immediate area and some from a wee bit further afield.  For much more on the County’s hidden treasures, listen to this clip from Scotland’s foremost travel blogger, Travels with a Kilt, on BBC Scotland’s Out for the Weekend show.

And don’t forget to visit the Wee County’s very own dedicated visitors’ website DiscoverClackmannanshire which is packed with ideas for days out, what’s on, and never-before-seen views of the County through the virtual tour guide. See you soon!
